Highlights

  • Coverage for home care, assisted living and nursing homes
  • Traditional plans: lowest yearly cost, use it or lose it
  • Hybrid life and long-term care plans: a death benefit if care is never needed
  • Shared benefits for couples on many plans
  • Inflation protection to keep up with rising care costs

Long-term care coverage helps pay for home care, assisted living or a nursing home when you can no longer manage daily activities on your own. Buying in your 50s usually costs much less than waiting, and you are more likely to qualify. Traditional plans have the lowest yearly cost. Hybrid plans cost more but pay a death benefit if care is never needed, and their premiums are generally guaranteed.

Long-term care benefits are paid only when you meet the policy's benefit triggers, generally needing help with at least two of six activities of daily living or having a severe cognitive impairment, as certified by a licensed health care practitioner, and after any waiting (elimination) period. Benefits are subject to the policy's limits and exclusions. Coverage requires health underwriting.

Premiums for traditional long-term care insurance are not guaranteed and may increase with state approval. Hybrid life and long-term care policies use the death benefit to pay for care; benefits used for care reduce the death benefit. Guarantees are backed by the claims-paying ability of the issuing insurer.
